I briefly talked about why I chose to create “The Essential Student
Artist’s Supplies locator Guide & Review” in an earlier post.
However, I wanted to expand on my reasons for choosing to do this review
and on why it was such a important personal decision to me.
When I first came to LC, I was not familiar with the Lynchburg
area, nor did I have a car, or many friends who did have a car. I found
it hard for the first few weeks of the semester to find and buy art
supplies in my budget with other impending expenses-books, school
supplies, etc. However, my art professor was very helpful in having
close contact with The Art Box (which will be reviewed later in this
blog), and someone from the Art Box came to LC to bring supplies that
art students could buy.
When this “review” assignment was handed out in class several
weeks ago, I looked at the options I had to choose from on the paper.
When I saw that I would be able to create a review of local art supplies
stores, galleries, and museums, I knew that was what I wanted to do.
I believe that Freshman year is a very transitional time, and I
feel like I had to work extra hard and be very thrifty as an art majour.
I looked back on my experiences for the majourity of my freshman year,
and realized that I wanted to help future art students at LC. Even if
“helping” means providing a few locations of where to buy supplies and
art resources.
As I continued to work on the paper fold-out pamphlet for this
assignment, I realized that not every LC art student will be able to
access one fold-out. Therefore, I decided to create this blog to go
along with it because the internet is free and more accessible than a
fold out.
In conclusion, I want to create the Art supplies review &
guide for upcoming freshman art students at LC, in order to help them
get their feet on the ground and to make them aware of the resources
here in Lynchburg. I want the upcoming freshman art student to know that
they have options, and although sometimes being an art majour may seem
challenging, that people are here to help them learn and grow.
